CleanCo and Allset Energy announced their partnership in the delivery of a groundbreaking pilot project, which will serve as the largest long-duration battery energy storage (BESS) trial in Australia to date. The trial will explore Australia’s largest grid-connected NAS Battery Energy Storage System at the Swanbank Clean Energy Hub in Ipswich, Queensland and will be supported by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) as the project’s knowledge-sharing partner. The 1.5MW sodium sulphur (NAS) battery will offer six and more hours of dispatchable energy and features an innovative, modular design that can be expanded to gigawatt scale.
Following an extensive market assessment, CleanCo selected Allset Energy’s novel long-duration BESS solution, which includes BASF’s NAS Batteries. The pilot, proposed at a former coal power station site, aims to enhance grid reliability and support Queensland’s shift to renewables. A feasibility study, led by Allset Energy, is expected to conclude in 2025, with potential operations starting in 2026.
This innovative project complements the existing Swanbank Big Battery (lithium-ion) and marks a significant step toward delivering long-duration, low-emission energy to some of Queensland’s largest energy users.
Allset Energy is the only Australian company certified and with proven in-field experience to deliver NAS projects. Allset Energy has delivered Australia’s first and only NAS BESS project for the Queensland University of Technology in the Australian Outback. Allset Energy has developed an integrated and compliant NAS BESS solution for deployment in the Australian market and is currently working on a number of other large-scale energy storage projects, supporting Australia’s much needed energy transition.
