Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS)

By 2030, BESS is expected to displace coal as the primary mechanism for managing dispatchable energy capacity requriements1.

Not just a battery, an energy storage system includes and offers a complete solution to store energy for subsequent use. While renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, have taken Australia by storm the unreliable nature of the natural resources fuelling them has posed a challenge for business planning purposes. Energy storage solutions, which consist of one or more batteries and power conversion system (PCS), can solve this by storing energy when generated and discharging it when your business needs it. Whether your business is looking for True Zero 24/7 renewable energy operations, better grid stability or diesel alternatives Allset Energy’s BESS turnkey solutions can provide cleaner energy, quieter operations and greater financial certainty than many other power sources.

Key Benefits Of BESS:

  • 24/7 True Zero renewable energy operations when coupled with a renewable energy source
  • Grid forming capability for off-grid and micro-grid solutions
  • Grid stabilisation enabling uninterrupted energy supply
  • Operating cost certainty compared to grid supplied electricity contracts
  • Lower noise pollution significantly quieter than diesel generators

Types of BESS

The pace of growth of the Australian energy storage market is unprecedented due to political, economic and environmental reforms. While technology is fast evolving the commonly known battery solutions are:

The most common chemistry found in batteries is lithium-ion based. Li-ion is available for small commercial settings as well as utility scale solutions. It delivers fast charge and discharge capability and is well suited to grid stabilising capabilities.

Tried and tested globally, sodium-sulfur technology is relatively new in Australia. This commercially mature technology is ideally suited for long discharge requirements and grid forming capabilities. Find out more about this technology here.

The redox (reduction-oxidation) electro-chemical capability allows long-duration discharge capacity, similar to sodium-sulfur batteries. However, this technology remains the most space consuming and is yet to be deployed in Australia as a commercially viable and scalable solution.

The currently available technologies vary in terms of depth of discharge, cycle frequency, operating temperature and lifespan. BESS has been widely recognised as an important piece in Australia achieving its Net Zero 2050 targets with further research, funding and innovation expected to advance the industry. Each of these technologies offers unique qualities and benefits that can help organisations eliminate or reduce the reliance on the grid and other non-renewable sources like diesel or gas. The right BESS solution will depend on your project requirements and constraints. Allset Energy has built significant expertise in the Australian BESS market and through our detailed client engagement process can develop the right solution for your business.
