NAS® Battery

The NAS® battery, manufactured by NGK Insulators Ltd. in Japan and distributed globally by BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH, is made up of molten sodium and sulfur electrodes as the basis of its technology. This offers six or more hours of continuous battery discharge, which can support 24/7 carbon neutral operations for large commercial, industrial and utility scale applications. As Australia pursues its renewable energy targets, this long-duration energy storage enables a higher penetration of renewables while stabilising the electricity grid.

NAS® Battery Benefits

  • SAFETY:

No thermal runaway. Proven track record and safe operations with over 250 installations worldwide.
  • CAPACITY:

Ability to store and shift large quantities of renewable energy over a prolonged period supporting 24/7 renewable operations.
  • CAPABILITY:

Black start, grid forming and around-the-clock grid frequency and voltage stabilisation capabilities. even in gruelling environments.
  • LONGEVITY:

Significantly longer lifespan than comparable technologies with over 20 years of commercially proven operations.
  • SUSTAINABILITY:

Made of ubiquitous raw materials, such as sodium, sulfur and silica, meaning the NAS® Battery is environmentally benign

Scalable Solution

The NAS® battery is available as a single container or as a modular solution with four containers per PCS, arranged in a two-by-two stackable formation. A 20’ container delivers 250kW of peak power and 1.45MWh of storage capacity and a BESS solution is scalable to gigawatt scale.

Allset Energy – Australian EPC for NAS® Batteries

NAS® Batteries have been deployed globally over the last 20 years, however, until recently they remained untested in the Australian market. Since 2020, Allset Energy has been working with BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH to bring this technology to the Australian market. AS BASF Australia’s EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) partner, Allset Energy has been pioneering the deployment of this technology in Australia together with a new-to-market PCS and smart SCADA and grid management capabilities to deliver turnkey NAS® BESS solutions to the Australian market. Recently, Allset Energy successfully deployed Australia’s first commercial NAS® BESS in Outback Australia in collaboration with the Queensland University of Technology, BASF and IGO, and with the support of the Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre.
