Australia’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program: A Game-Changer for Home and Business Energy Storage

While Australia has the highest rate of rooftop solar in the world, just one in 40 households have a battery, meaning they can’t store cheap renewable energy for when they need it most. Until now, battery prices have meant that energy storage was out of reach for many households and businesses but that is about to change!

What’s changing?

Starting on the 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is launching the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a $2.3 billion initiative designed to make battery storage more affordable and accessible. This program offers households, small businesses, and community facilities an estimated 30% saving on the upfront cost of installing eligible battery systems, with potential savings up to $18,000 depending on the installed battery capacity and the installation year. The Program will be delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)  – the same system that supports Federal solar panel subsidies – and the discount can be claimed as an upfront discount through Allset Energy.

The key criteria simplified

  • New or replaced battery installations with a storage capacity between 5kWh and 100kWh; The rebate applies up to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.
  • Expansions to existing battery systems (minimum 5kWh and total system size must remain under 100kWh)
  • all on-grid battery systems (including the inverter) need to have the technical capability to participate in a virtual power plant (VPP)
  • Residential, rental, commercial, and community installations

Note that the subsidy is available only for the first time a battery system is installed, added to, or replaced. This means if an existing battery at the premises has already received a rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program than the new (additional or replacing) battery is not eligible. For this reason, careful consideration should be given to system right-sizing.

Battery right-sizing more important than ever

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to batteries, and the size and configuration of your system will depend on your usage patterns and goals.

A good starting point is to review your recent electricity bills to understand average daily consumption, your current electricity rates and any surplus solar feed-in (generated by a solar PV system).

From there, consider what you want to achieve:

  • Are you aiming to reduce peak demand charges or ensure backup power during outages?
  • Do you have an existing solar PV system generating surplus energy that could be stored instead of exported?
  • Are you looking to charge your battery during off-peak, lower-cost periods from the grid?

Allset Energy can help guide you through this decision making process to help determine the most effective battery solution for your home or business.

As the push for clean energy gains momentum, businesses and households across the country are looking for smart ways to cut costs, reduce reliance on the grid, and make their premises more sustainable. With the cost barrier significantly lowered thanks to the introduction of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, investing in a battery system is not only environmentally responsible, it’s financially smart.

If you have been considering battery storage for your premises then don’t miss out on the opportunity to save more with the new rebate. Allset Energy is ready to guide you from start to finish, making it easy and affordable to power your home the smarter way.
